Your Winter Family-Friendly Guide to Tahoe
California 89 is proud to call Lake Tahoe & Truckee home. With endless activities, bringing your family to the region has never been more entertaining. The region boasts a wide variety of winter activities perfect for parents and kids alike. Whether you want to hit the slopes with the family or learn more about the science that led to the development of the Lake Tahoe basin, there is something for everyone in your family!
UC Davis Science Center
Are your kids curious about Lake Tahoe and its origins? We can’t blame ‘em! This iconic destination is home to some pretty cool science. Head to the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, in Incline Village for interactive stations that illuminate facts about Lake Tahoe’s environment. This eco-friendly building is home to some of the country’s leading scientists. So bring your kids, explore the exhibits, learn about the lake ecosystem, and find out how you can keep Tahoe blue. California 89 is a proud partner of the Tahoe Fund, and when you shop our Love Blue Collection online or in store, we donate $1 for every item sold to support keeping our beautiful environment healthy for generations to come!

No matter your age, kids 5+ will love the Treetop Adventure Park. With three locations across North Lake Tahoe, their monkey-like courses for the little ones will keep your kids entertained for hours. Each course is designed to accommodate every level of athleticism and offers an interactive experience that will get your kids high above the ground. With locations in Olympic Valley, Tahoe Vista and Tahoe City, they are easy to access and open year-round!
Ride the Aerial Tram at Palisades Tahoe
Not ready to take the leap into skiing, no problem. The Aerial Tram at Palisades Tahoe gives you the experience of being on the mountain, without all the gear rentals. The Aerial Tram is a 10 minute ride that climbs over 2,000 vertical feet and soars above the mountain's Tram Face. Once you reach the top, you can explore High Camp, located at 8,200’, you can breathe in the fresh mountain air or head to the 1960 Winter Olympics Museum. This activity will spark the inner explorer in each of your family members.
Don’t forget to layer up! This hoodie is the perfect accessory for those warm days in the base area and cold temps that you could experience up at elevation.
Play in the Tahoe Snow
A trip to Truckee Tahoe is not complete without playing in the snow! In December, we received record breaking snowfall. So what does that mean for you and your family? It means no shortage of winter opportunities, including:
- Sledding & hot chocolate at the Granlibakken sled hill
- Ice skating and snow play at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park or Northstar California
- Disco tubing at Palisades Tahoe
- Hit the slopes - take the family out to any of the region's 12 downhill ski resorts. We recommend starting off at one of our smaller resorts - Homewood Mountain Resort or Diamond Peak Resort. Each of the region's resorts offer beginner rental packages that are sure to get your kids learning in no time!
When heading to Tahoe this winter, always remember to pack the appropriate winter clothing, for both kids and adults. Stay warm by swinging by our Downtown Truckee California 89 location and pick out some kid’s PJ bottoms, these cozy Lake Tahoe tees or splurge on a new beanie for yourself.
